Alaskan Garden Quilt Tutorial

This is one of those ideas I had which I designed on plain paper, bought a bunch of fabric (hoping I had enough), then started cutting and putting together.  Very easy, but I’m giving no guarantee on the yardage requirements as I used an online calculator hoping to be able to provide that information after I had this all sewn together! I also did not cut all of my strips or squares at the same time because I’m just weird like that.  I would cut some, make some blocks, then cut some more. So I hope these instructions work for those that want to follow this like a pattern and cut almost all of their pieces at the same time!

This is for the top only with an approximate finished size of 56″ x 81″

White fabric – 2 3/4 yards

Large floral print (for center of block A) 1/2 yard

Small floral print for blocks B and C – 1 yard

Solid color blue – 1 1/2 yards

All sewing is done using a 1/4″ seam allowance.

This quilt is made up of three blocks:

Alaskan Garden 3 Blocks

From white fabric cut:

  • 36 strips that are 3.5″ x 15″
  • 36 squares that are 3.5″ x 3.5″
  • 4 strips that are 2″ x 15″

From large floral fabric cut 18 strips that are 3.5″ x 9″

From small floral fabric cut 17 strips that are 3.5″ x 15″

From blue fabric cut 34 strips that are 2″ x 15″

Block A – make 18 blocks

Alaskan Garden Large Block

Step 1 – take two white – 3.5″ x 3.5″ squares and sew one to the top and one to the bottom of a large floral  3.5″ x 9″ strip.

Step 2 – take two white 3.5″ x 15″ strips and sew one to the left side and one to the right side of your floral center.

Block B – make 13 blocks

Block B

Take one small floral 3.5″ x 15″ strip and sew one blue 2″ x 15″ strip to the left side and one blue 2″ x 15″ strip to the right side.

Block C – make 4 blocks

Block C

Step 1 –  Take one small floral 3.5″ x 15″ strip and sew one blue 2″ x 15″ strip to the left side and one blue 2″ x 15″ strip to the right side.

Step 2 – Sew one white 2″ x 15″ strip to the side of a blue strip (doesn’t matter if it’s right or left because you’ll flip the block as needed when putting it all together)

Quilt Construction

Row 1 – Use four Block A’s and three Block B’s to sew a horizontal row with alternating blocks

Sew Blocks Together 01

Measure the total width of this row then cut blue strips 2″ wide to equal the width of that row (you will need to cut two strips the width of your fabric, join them together then cut it down to the size needed).

Sew the blue strip to the bottom of your horizontal row.

Sew Blue Strip on Bottom

Row 2 – Use three Block A’s, two Block B’s, and two Block C’s

Start the row with a Block C with the white strip on the left, then attach a Block A, Block B, Block A, Block B, Block A, and end with a Block C with the white strip on the right.

Sew Blocks Together 02

Measure the total width of this row then cut blue strips 2″ wide to equal the width of that row (you will need to cut two strips the width of your fabric, join them together then cut it down to the size needed).

Sew the blue strip to the bottom of your horizontal row.

Sew Row 2 to the bottom of Row 1.

Join row 1 and 2

Make Row 3 like Row 1 , sew it to the bottom of Row 2

Make Row 4 like Row 2, sew it to the bottom of Row 3

Make Row 5 like Row 1 except do not sew a blue strip to the bottom of Row 5.  Sew Row 5 to the bottom of Row 4.

Outer Sashing – Measure the length of your quilt top and cut and sew together 2″ strips of blue fabric to equal that length and sew one strip to the left side and one strip to the right side.  Now measure the width of your quilt and cut and sew together 2″ strips of blue fabric that equal the width and sew to the top and bottom of your quilt top.

Your top should now look like this:

If anyone makes the quilt I would love to see a picture of your finished product.  If you would allow I would like to post it on my blog.
